Travel rhythm model — sustainable touring
Operational goal (human and animal care): protect Friday and Sunday at home at some regular cadence when feasible; avoid pretending “every week is the same” — use this as a planning default and negotiate reality with HQ.
Preferred weekly pattern (illustrative)
| Day | Default posture |
|---|---|
| Friday | Home — light remote, prep packs, animal care, sleep. |
| Saturday | Travel or heavy local — if away, make it count with stacked touches. |
| Sunday | Home or short nearby only — protect recharge and dependents. |
| Sunday night / Monday | Travel after work variant for surrogate-heavy weeks; document for volunteers. |
| Monday–Tuesday | Immersion days in market (two-day city model). |
| Wednesday | Return / debrief; half-day admin acceptable. |
| Wed night – Fri | Optional second trip only if treasury, energy, and family coverage align. |
For volunteers scheduling Kelly (or surrogate)
- Never book back-to-back late nights without food and drive safety review.
- Put drive blocks on the public-facing schedule — transparency reduces no-shows.
- Build 15-minute buffers between emotionally heavy rooms (grief, conflict, press).
For local guides
- Provide one-pager per day: addresses, cell numbers, parking, bathroom access.
- Pre-drive traffic and weather note the night before.
- Keep snacks and water in vehicle; low blood sugar wrecks empathy.
What good looks like
- Schedules volunteers can explain to their own families.
- Predictable weekly debrief slot with county coordinator.
- fewer “hero days” that extract unsustainable favors from hosts.
